US Proposes a 25% Tariff on Goods from Canada and Mexico

November 26, 2024

November 26, 2024 - The US has announced its intention to impose new tariffs with a ceiling of up to 25% as early as January 20th, 2025.

Tariffs of this size and magnitude would have a significant impact on importers on both sides of the border, and their announcement has already caused a renewed focus on Canada/US trade relations.

In a joint letter to Ottawa, the Canadian premiers wrote asking for an urgent meeting to determine Canada’s response and tactics to this announcement, indicating the importance of “[acting] now to work together and seize this opportunity to grow and strengthen our historic partnership with the US.”
